BALTIMORE –- Wilson Betemit is finally getting ready to play in a game. On Tuesday, Betemit will be the designated hitter for Gulf Coast.
Betemit severely sprained his right knee in the last week of spring training and has yet to play. He’ll start a 20-day rehab assignment, which means the Orioles would like to have him available to be activated before Sept. 1, when playoff rosters have to be set.
Manager Buck Showalter said that the rehab assignment could be extended with Betemit’s permission. He could also stay on the disabled list.
When Betemit was hurt, the original prognosis was that he would miss six-eight weeks.
“I remember running on the field when he did that. I knew there was no way he kind of rolled an ankle. To think that he has a chance to play games in early August, I would have signed up for that in blood in Sarasota,” Showalter said.
“It’s been a long road for him. He’s had a couple of people close to him pass away.”
