BALTIMORE – Wilson Betemit is eligible to return from the 60-day disabled list on May 25. He’s probably not going to make it by then.
Betemit suffered a frightening injury to his right knee on March 25, which was a slight tear in his posterior cruciate ligament. At the time, Betemit was supposed to be out six-eight weeks.
He underwent surgery in early April, and he’s progressing.
“It’s still in play,” manager Buck Showalter said. “From what I know, it’s a stretch, but it still could come.”
Betemit has been working in the pool in Sarasota, Fla.
“Until he starts baseball activities, I’m not going to pay a lot of attention to it,” Showalter said.
Miguel Gonzalez will throw on Thursday to see if the blister on his right thumb will allow him to pitch on Saturday. If not, the Orioles may have to disable him and they could recall Steve Johnson, whose turn it would be to pitch.
“I’m hoping that it goes well and he pitches for us on Saturday,” Showalter said.
“I’d hate to DL him with a blister, but this is a little bit different blister than your normal one. This has gotten through the callous and gotten through the blister underneath it, but it’s healing well.”
Because the Orioles have two off days next week, Gonzalez could miss just one start and return on May 18.
