Showalter: 'This is about being the last team standing'

SARASOTA, Fla. – The Orioles play their second and final intrasquad game on Thursday morning. It’s scheduled for five innings.

The biggest surprise in the lineups, which are in reverse alphabetical order, is that Nelson Cruz is playing. Manager Buck Showalter said that he planned to play Cruz, who didn’t work out with the team until Tuesday, in Saturday’s spring home opener against Toronto.

Wei-Yin Chen and Bud Norris are starting. Other pitchers scheduled include T.J. McFarland, Kelvin De La Cruz, Tommy Hunter, Evan Meek, Darren O’Day, Tim Berry, Josh Stinson and Troy Patton.

Patton is ineligible to pitch for the first 25 games of the regular season due to his suspension for amphetamine use.

Henry Urrutia leads off for the visiting team. Delmon Young for the home team.

Alexi Casilla says his right hamstring is still sore, but it’s healing. Quintin Berry’s back is fine, and he could play.

Showalter wanted to have a light day before spring games begin on Friday when the Orioles play the Tampa Bay Rays at Port Charlotte.

Chris Tillman will start against Erik Bedard, for whom he was traded. Bedard recently signed a minor league contract with the Rays.
