Showalter: 'This is about being the last team standing'

(Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports)

SARASOTA, Fla. – Nelson Cruz talked Buck Showalter into playing in Thursday’s second intrasquad game on Thursday morning.

Cruz was hitting ninth; the lineups were in reverse alphabetical order. Delmon Young led off. In the third inning, Cruz tapped out to the pitcher.

The game was ended after 4 ½ innings.

For the second time in as many days, Jonathan Schoop hit a long home run off Bud Norris. This one landed on the TV platform in left center field. That’s where Young’s homer on Wednesday landed.

Norris and Wei-Yin Chen each pitched an inning. Tommy Hunter, T.J. McFarland and Josh Stinson were among the pitchers.

Henry Urrutia had a single, stole a base and scored a run.

Orioles video coordinator Michael Silverman umpired the top of the fifth and theatrically called a game-ending strikeout on Schoop. Troy Patton, who won’t pitch in the first 25 games because of a suspension for amphetamine use was on the mound.

NOTE: Left-handed reliever Mike Belfiore was held out of the intrasquad games with a slight fracture of his left pinkie. He’s now been given the go ahead to pitch.

-Zach Britton will follow Chris Tillman in Friday’s game at Tampa Bay.
