SARASOTA, Fla. – Nelson Cruz is on his way to the Orioles spring training complex. Cruz, who agreed to terms on a one-year, $8 million contract, was flying from the Dominican Republic to Miami on Saturday.
Cruz was supposed to drive to Sarasota and arrive Saturday night. The Orioles are hoping to schedule a physical for Sunday. It could carry into Monday.
He served a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal last year. After Cruz completed the suspension, he returned and play for Texas in its Wild Card game against Tampa Bay.
Last season, Cruz hit .266 in 109 games with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs. He didn’t become a regular until he was 28 when he hit 33 home runs for the Rangers. It was the first of five straight years of at least 20 home runs and 75 RBIs.
In 21 games at Oriole Park, the 33-year-old Cruz has batted .333 with two home runs and nine RBIs.
