No Baltimore Oriole has won a major award since 1997. Chris Davis is hoping to change that when the Most Valuable Player award is announced next Thursday night.
Let’s look at the major awards.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Announcement: Monday night 6 p.m. MLB Network
Last Orioles winner: Greg Olson-1989
Finalists: Chris Archer, Tampa Bay, Jose Iglesias, Detroit, Wil Myers, Tampa Bay
Oriole who could get votes: None
Outlook: I am a voter for this one, so I can’t disclose my choice until after the vote is announced. Next year, Kevin Gausman may be a candidate. He was 2 1/3 innings short of the 50 that disqualify a player from rookie status.
MANAGER OF THE YEAR:
Announcement: Tuesday at 6 p.m. MLB Network
Last Orioles winner: Davey Johnson-1997
Finalists: John Farrell, Boston, Terry Francona, Cleveland, Bob Melvin, Oakland
Outlook: In a mild upset last year, Melvin beat out Buck Showalter. Farrell should win over Francona. The voting was done before the postseason. Showalter will probably not get any votes this season.
CY YOUNG AWARD:
Announcement: Wednesday at 6 p.m. MLB Network
Last Orioles winner: Steve Stone-1980
Finalists: Yu Darvish, Texas, Hisashi Iwakuma, Seattle, Max Scherzer, Detroit
Oriole who could get some votes: Chris Tillman
Outlook: Scherzer had a wonderful year, and I would be shocked if he didn’t win.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER:
Announcement: Thursday at 6 p.m. MLB Network
Last Orioles winner: Cal Ripken-1991
Finalists: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit, Chris Davis, Orioles, Mike Trout, Los Angeles
Outlook: I’ll discuss Davis’ chances at length this weekend, but I think he’ll come in second, and Cabrera will take his second straight MVP.
Adam Jones came in sixth last year, and he should crack the top 10 again this year.
