Its Prime Time for the Orioles. Not only are the Orioles the subject of national attention in this weeks Sports Illustrated, theyll also be featured on the NFL Network on Thursday before the Browns-Ravens game.Deion Sanders, who played for Buck Showalter in the minor leagues, took batting practice before Wednesdays game. He hit several balls deep to the outfield.Bobby Dickerson, one of the Orioles minor league coaches, and former minor league teammate of Sanders, threw batting practice to him.Sanders wore No. 21 and dressed next to Adam Jones. He recalled his time with Showalter in Albany, N.Y., fondly. Buck's a good man. You've got to understand a wide-eyed kid with a lot of dreams and aspirations coming out of Florida State, and I go to Albany and I meet Buck Showalter. He's been the same for two decades; integrity, work ethic, all that he stands for," Sanders said.A nine-year major leaguer with the Yankees, Braves, Reds and Giants, Sanders said he hadnt swung a bat since he last visited with Showalter when he was managing Texas last decade. Can I get you out there to pinch run or pinch hit late in the game? Showalter asked Sanders then.
"As long as they throw it straight," Sanders said.
At 45, Sanders is still in excellent shape. He has some advice for the Orioles.Stay focused, man. Stay focused. They've got what it takes. They've got the pitching, the hitting, the fielding. They''re very intelligent, Sanders said. They've got what it takes. They've just got to stay focused and play every game as if it's a playoff game."
