Expect doubt about Orioles

Could we be headed for another season of skepticism with the Orioles?

Their relative lack of off-season activity — especially when compared with such hyperactive American League East competitors as the Blue Jays and Red Sox — not only is playing on the nerves of Orioles fans, but also may be feeding the perception that 2012’s wondrous run to the postseason was a one-timer (to use a hockey phrase; you do remember hockey, don’t you?).

This would feed off last season’s widely held belief that the Orioles were not for real. Do you recall how that went? Everyone kept waiting for the bubble to burst. Even after fans in Baltimore had finally given in and started to believe, the word from outside media was that it was just a matter of time before the Orioles reverted to form. This kept up for a long time, even into September. In fact, when the race for the playoffs was handicapped, few pundits were picking the Orioles.

So get ready for more of the same, especially if the O’s don’t make any moves. And if they jump out to a strong start, well, don’t be surprised if there are still plenty of Orioles agnostics.
