Zach Britton and Jake Arrieta aren’t making bids just to become the Orioles’ No. 5 starter. They could also be auditioning for other clubs, too.

Britton and Arrieta are among the pitchers who have drawn interest by the Rangers, CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports. The list is quite long, and the Rangers have their own competition going for the fifth slot, but Texas may prefer that one of the competitors, Robbie Ross, go back to the bullpen, where he performed well last season.

The Orioles wouldn’t necessarily want to depart with whoever ends up the loser in the duel for the rotation. The pitcher who begins the season as a starter won’t be guaranteed to finish the season there — as anyone who was paying attention last season knows. However, pitching has been a much-sought commodity in the major leagues since, well, there have been major leagues, so each time Britton and Arrieta take the mound, they’re being eyed by more than just the O’s staff.

As spring training comes to a close and the Orioles decide on their starters, we may be hearing more chatter about the odd man out becoming the new man in with another club.
