BALTIMORE – Kevin Gausman’s future with the Orioles is undoubtedly as a starter. For now, he’s in the bullpen.
Gausman pitched back-to-back games in New York last weekend and was the loser on Tuesday in Cleveland. Since then, he’s watched.
“He was pretty sore; I don’t want to say sore, but stiff after his last outing. He was a two or three day off for me. He was unavailable the last couple of days,” manager Buck Showalter said.
“I want to be careful with him. He’s telling us a little differently. I hear and see enough where I want to be careful how we use that. I’m careful about yo-yoing young players like that haven’t done it. I don’t think it’s good business.”
Gausman is 2-4 with a 5.77 ERA in 12 appearances, seven in relief.
NOTES: Henry Urrutia won’t be traveling with the Orioles to Toronto next weekend. The Cuban defector is temporarily prevented from leaving the country. Urrutia will go to Sarasota, Fla. for a few days and meet the Orioles in Boston on Sept. 17.
-Showalter said the Orioles were considering sending pitcher T.J. McFarland to Venezuela for winter ball but wanted to assess the political climate.
