NEW YORK -- Midway through Fridays game at Yankee Stadium, the puzzled fans started booing the home team.Now, this is getting serious.The Orioles came into the game trailing the fading New York Yankees by just three games in the AL East. Thanks to Miguel Gonzalez, its down to two.Gonzalez hadnt started in 11 days, but there was no evident rustiness as he limited New York to just four singles in seven innings as the Orioles beat the Yankees 6-1 before 43,352.Since July 18, the Orioles are 27-14, and have shaved eight games off New Yorks lead.At 73-58, the Orioles are 15 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1997 season, and have won five of seven games in the Bronx this season.The Orioles scored all the runs Gonzalez needed in the second off Hiroki Kuroda (12-10) in the second. Adam Jones led off with a single. Matt Wieters singled him to third. Jones scored on Chris Davis fly ball to left. Mark Reynolds followed with a long home run to left, his 13th of the year, to make it 3-0.Gonzalez (6-3) retired the first nine batters with only one close call. Russell Martin, leading off the third lined to first. Reynolds made a lunging catch to snare it.Derek Jeter led off the fourth with a single, and through five, Gonzalez sailed through with just 55 pitches. J.J. Hardy hit a one-out home run in the sixth, his 18th, for a 4-0 lead.In the sixth, Gonzalez threw 24 pitches, allowing a leadoff single to Ichiro Suzuki and a walk to Jayson Nix. He escaped damage by getting Derek Jeter to hit into a force play, striking out Nick Swisher and retiring Robinson Cano on a pop foul to third. Gonzalez has struck out Swisher five times in six at-bats in his two starts against the Yankees (75-56). In the seventh, Eric Chavez singled with one out, and Russell Martin singled him to third with two out. Suzuki grounded into a force play to end the inning and Gonzalezs start.Gonzalez struck out nine and walked one. In his two starts against New York, Gonzalez struck out 17 and walked one in 13 23 innings,Darren ODay pitched a perfect eighth inning.Kuroda pitched 8 13 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.Reynolds hit his second home run of the game in the ninth off Derek Lowe. He also allowed an RBI single to Nick Markakis.Curtis Granderson hit his 34th home run with one out in the ninth off Brian Matusz for the Yankees only run.NOTES:-Markakis is 10-for-19 in four games at Yankee Stadium since moving to the leadoff spot.-Omar Quintanilla is in an 0-for-21 slump.-Swisher struck out four times.-Troy Patton, whos been on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle, threw off flat ground on Thursday in Sarasota, Fla. He is not close to returning.-On Saturday, Wei-Yin Chen (12-7, 3.78) faces David Phelps (3-4, 2.96).
