With a season to go before free agency, the Orioles traded Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies for Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom. Lindstrom was later dealt for Joe Saunders.
That deal helped make the Orioles’ season. Now, Guthrie gets his reward.
On Tuesday, Guthrie agreed to a three-year, $25 million contract with the Royals, who acquired him in July.
Guthrie valiantly pitched for the Orioles. From 2007-11, he was 47-65, twice leading the American League in losses.
He enjoyed Baltimore and was sorry to leave. He eagerly submitted to interviews after his departure and took out a newspaper ad thanking fans.
Guthrie’s months in Colorado weren’t pleasant, but in his 14 starts after the trade, the 33-year-old went 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA.
The Orioles didn’t want to make a long-term commitment to Guthrie, but the Royals have.
