BALTIMORE – J.J. Hardy will miss his second straight game with back tightness on Sunday.
Hardy reported he felt, “100 percent better than yesterday. I don’t feel that spasm, maybe a little bit of tightness, but not the spasm. I took 20, 25 swings, didn’t feel it at all. I moved around outside and felt some tightness.”
Hardy, the American League's starting shortstop in July's All-Star game, missed a game earlier this month because manager Buck Showalter wanted to rest him.
“Coming into the season, I wanted to play 162,” Hardy said. “I’ve learned with my body what it can it do and what it can’t do. I don’t want this to turn into something where I have to miss a week or two weeks.”
Hardy said that he would be available to pinch-hit.
"I could push the envelope if I wanted to, but I have a chance to get him back 100 percent tomorrow," Showalter said.
Ryan Flaherty will start at shortstop for the second straight game.
