As the Yankees turn …

They haven’t even reported to spring training yet and there is drama. If you assumed Kevin Youkilis’ transition from longtime Yankees nemesis while with the Red Sox to new teammate in New York would be seamless, assume again.

Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain reached out to Youkilis to welcome him to the team after the third baseman signed as a free agent. Maybe Chamberlain wanted let Youkilis know that those pitches aimed at his head when Youkilis was with Boston were nothing personal.

So Chamberlain called. He’s still waiting for a call back.

“I left him a voicemail,” Chamberlain said, as quoted by the New York Post. “No, he did not call me back.

“I did everything I could, and I can’t control what Kevin Youkilis does. Am I surprised [he didn’t return the call]? Not really. I’m bound to run into him at some point — sooner, rather than later, I’m assuming. We’ll see what happens.”

Youkilis’ agent, Joe Bick, said don’t read anything big into the lack of a return call.

“It was in the middle of a bunch of different things going on [for Youkilis],” Bick said. “There was no malicious intent.”

Bick said the two should be able to put their testy history behind him.

“[Stuff] happens,” Bick said. “It’s just two guys that have been on two different clubs that are extremely competitive.”
