What’s shakin’ in American League East land as spring training fast approaches:

*In former Red Sox news, one-and-done manager Bobby Valentine is returning to his pundit role, but not with ESPN. Valentine will be a baseball commentator for NBC Sports Radio.

*In possibly future Red Sox news, Boston apparently hasn’t yet given up on working out a deal with free-agent first baseman Mike Napoli, whose initially agreed-to contract went back into negotiations when the club found out he has a pre-existing hip problem. Boston Globe reporter Peter Abraham described the Red Sox as “hopeful” of signing Napoli.

*Derek Jeter, last seen lying on the field like Robert Griffin III in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s playoff game, will be in the Yankees’ lineup come the start of the season, general manager Brian Cashman said.

"It's all in the doctors' hands right now," Cashman told ESPN.com’s Wallace Matthews. "But he'll be ready on Opening Day."

Jeter’s broken ankle has healed enough that he’s out of a walking boot, and he’s been working out on an underwater treadmill. No baseball activities, however, until maybe late this month.
