Showalter: We're trying to stay up with the best teams

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – It’s clear the Orioles want to get something done before they leave the winter meetings on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Dan Duquette said the team had made offers to players. It’s clear there’s an offer to closer Grant Balfour, who’s leaving the Oakland Athletics.

There are a number of questions: How much is the offer for? Who is the Orioles’ competition for Balfour? How long will they keep the offer open? Will they quickly move on to John Axford, Joaquin Benoit, Fernando Rodney or others if Balfour doesn’t sign fast enough?

The Orioles need a closer to replace Jim Johnson, and Balfour, even though he’s about to turn 36, has less wear on him than Benoit or Rodney, who are the same age.

An industry source indicated that the Orioles that don’t have a lot of interest in free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz even though a report indicated that an offer was made.
