CHICAGO – Manny Machado will have surgery on his right knee next week and will be lost for the season.
Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, will officially comment on the reports on Saturday. The news, originally reported by Yahoo! Sports, was confirmed by an industry source.
Machado, who injured the knee on Aug 11 against the New York Yankees, had surgery on his left knee last October. The Orioles, who have listed his injury as a sprained right knee, may have to shop around for another third baseman to help in their playoff push. The Orioles have until Aug. 31 to add players and have them eligible for the playoffs.
The 22-year-old third baseman, who has been traveling with the team, was in the clubhouse after the Orioles’ 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs, but that was shortly before the news broke.
When questioned about the injury before the game, manager Buck Showalter said that he might have a better idea of a timetable for Machado on Saturday.
“I’ll probably try to bring some clarity into that situation and gather what he’s being told as far as when baseball activity would start and all that stuff, I’ll try to clear that up for you, probably tomorrow, give you a more definitive idea,” he said.
