As the Orioles head into the winter, five of their eight positions are now solid. With Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Manny Machado, catcher, short, third, right and center fields are in safe hands for 2013.
Machado’s quick ascension and easy adaption to third was a surprise, a most happy one, and he began what looks to be a long career on Aug. 9.
At only 20, Machado was considered a high-end prospect, but as a shortstop. He moved so adeptly to third that the Orioles can now concentrate on taking care of the Mark Reynolds situation at first, as well as the second base and left field situations.
For anyone who thought the Orioles’ success was a fluke, having those five positions set with players between 20 and 30 for at least the next two seasons, means a solid foundation.
All those players are either under contract or club control through 2014.
