Manny Machado topped off his stellar season by winning the Rawlings Platinum Glove as the best defender in the American League.
The award was announced at a dinner honoring all the Gold Glove recipients.
Machado won the award by winning 27.6 percent of the fan vote. He also led the sabermetric components. The award is decided by a combination of both.
On Thursday night, Machado lost out to Boston’s Dustin Pedroia for the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year. Pedroia finished second with 17.6 percent of the vote. The Orioles’ J.J. Hardy finished third with 12.8 pecent.
Machado won his first Gold Glove last month. He was joined in New York for the ceremony by Hardy, who won his second straight and Adam Jones, who won his third and second in a row.
Orioles legend Brooks Robinson presented Machado with the award.
NOTE: The Orioles are expected to name Dom Chiti as bullpen coach, perhaps as early as Monday. Chiti worked with new pitching coach Dave Wallace in Atlanta, where he worked as a special assistant. He also worked with manager Buck Showalter in Texas as the bullpen coach for one season.
