The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals each won three Gold Gloves. Perhaps it was fitting that they share the award for the American League’s top defensive team in the Wilson Awards announced on Thursday night.
The Orioles had set major league records for fewest errors in a season, most errorless games and highest fielding percentage. The Royals were lauded for their excellent team defense.
Manny Machado, who won a Gold Glove for his outstanding third base play was named the Orioles’ defensive player of the year. The Wilson awards are measured by scouting information, sabermetric measures and fielding statistics.
However, Machado lost out to Boston’s Dustin Pedroia for the American League’s top defender.
During the announcement, which was televised by MLB Network, analyst Dan Plesac called Machado the best defensive player in the league as his play on New York’s Luis Cruz was shown.
“When you can shake hands with the beer man in the front row after you get through with a play, you know it's pretty challenging. Or the Oriole fan that was there," manager Buck Showalter said after the July 6 game.
