Nick Markakis underwent surgery on Tuesday morning on his broken left thumb in Sarasota, Fla.Markakis had pins inserted into the broken thumb by Dr. Brian Schofield, who removed the hamate bone from his right hand on June 1.He called me from the recovery room, manager Buck Showalter said. The pins will be removed in about three weeks, Showalter said, which coincides with the regular season.Originally, they thought they were going to put a plate in there, Showalter said. They were concerned about the range of motion. They were able to put the pins in there and align it properly. The regular season ends on Oct. 3, and Markakis is hoping to be able to play if the Orioles make the postseason.Nickys one of our faster healers with all the stuff weve had gone on, Showalter said.
