BALTIMORE – For the moment, the Orioles have a five-man bench. With two off days this week and two starting pitchers on the disabled list, the Orioles have 11 pitchers with an eight-man bullpen.
Yamaico Navarro came up from Norfolk for the second time this year, and his presence gives manager Buck Showalter some comfort. He used both Alexi Casilla and Chris Dickerson to pinch run Tuesday night, and he could have used Navarro, too.
“It was kind of nice to have a five-man bench like they have in the National League with the extra player,” Showalter said.
He said with a four-man bench it was questionable that he would used Casilla to pinch run for Ryan Flaherty.
Navarro was batting .303 for the Tides, and he brings versatility to the team. He can play second, shortstop and third base as well as the outfield.
“When you play a lot of positions, you have a lot of opportunities to play,” Navarro said.
