BALTIMORE – Matt Fortese, a lifelong New York Yankees fan, is in critical condition after an assault last week at Oriole Park because the victim was wearing a Yankees cap.

The 25-year-old Fortese, from Hagerstown, Md., was sitting in the bleachers last Wednesday for a game between the Orioles and Nationals. After Fortese was taunted by two men for wearing the Yankees hat and had beer thrown on his date, he confronted them, and he was attacked.

He was punched and plunged onto concrete five feet below. Fortese suffered a skull fracture, and was originally listed in serious condition at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center.

On Sunday, his condition was downgraded to critical condition, a hospital official told the Baltimore Sun.

Two men, Gregory Fleischman, 22 of Jarretsville, Md. and Michael Bell, 21 of Annapolis, Md. have been charged.

“We are all saddened by what happened last Wednesday. Our thoughts and concerns remain with Matt and his family,” Orioles vice president of communications Greg Bader told CSNBaltimore.com.

A law enforcement source told CSNBaltimore.com that last Wednesday, which was the first hot day of the baseball season, was an unusually active one at the ballpark.

Last season, the Orioles beefed up security by hiring their own guards to help the police.
