NEW YORK – The Orioles added another pitcher to their minor league inventory when they claimed right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett on waivers from Toronto on Friday.
Burnett, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, is 3-4 with a 4.61 ERA in 174 major league games with Minnesota from 2010-12.
“He is a solid major leaguer with four wins and 10 holds last year with a 3.50 ERA and at 25 can contribute this year and support a major league pen,” Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said in a text message.
The Orioles are chocked full of experienced major leaguers in the bullpen including Jairo Asencio, Manny Delcarmen, Mark Hendrickson, Scott Proctor, Adam Russell and Mark Schlereth.
To make room for Burnett on the 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred Wilson Betemit from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
