BALTIMORE – There are times this season that the Orioles certainly could have used Steve Johnson’s versatility. But, Johnson has been sidelined for two months with a sore right shoulder.
On Wednesday night, Johnson pitched two scoreless innings for Aberdeen. His next step is unknown.
Johnson was effective in 2012 for the Orioles. Last year, he was hampered by injuries and pitched in only nine major league games.
While manager Buck Showalter would like Johnson to be a reliever because the Orioles are more likely to have a need there, he knows that Johnson could beef up Norfolk’s shaky rotation.
“I know what Norfolk’s needs are,” Showalter said. “I’d love to get him back where’s he’s an option for us because he’s a contributor if we can get him healthy.”
NOTE: Henry Urrutia, who had sports hernia surgery in May, is getting ready to leave Gulf Coast. Urrutia is 3-for-13 on his rehab assignment. The Orioles haven’t decided if there will be an interim stop between Gulf Goast and Norfolk.
-Kevin Gausman will pitch for Norfolk against Gwinnett on Sunday.
