BALTIMORE –- Francisco Rodriguez collects saves, not wins. In his career, he has 304 saves, but none yet with the Orioles
Rodriguez has two wins for the Orioles. He pitched a perfect seventh inning on Friday night in their 9-7 win. On Aug. 7, he also pitched a clean seventh inning as the Orioles scored seven late runs in a 10-3 win.
“Down by one or two runs, it’s my job to hold them and give the offense a chance to come back and score some runs. Hopefully, I can get more than two wins and get a streak going on,” Rodriguez said.
In 12 games with the Orioles, Rodriguez has a 3.86 ERA. He’s allowed five runs—all on home runs.
“Mentally, I’m a closer. That’s how I prepare myself. Pitching four, five or six runs down—or up, it’s very different. It changes everything,” Rodriguez said. “In this game, you make adjustments quick.”
Rodriguez knows that Jim Johnson is the team’s closer, and he says he’s talked with him a bit about the difficulties he’s gone through.
“Everybody goes through it. It’s a long season. It’s how you bounce back after this. He seems to be back on track. Hopefully we can get the same guy we did last night because we’re going to need him to accomplish what we want to,” Rodriguez said.
“He knows what it takes to go out there and get things done.”
