If the Orioles sign Randy Wolf, hell have to be added to the active roster by Friday to be eligible for the postseason roster.Hes kind of like a free agent. I heard hes going to throw today or tomorrow, manager Buck Showalter said.Theres a chance hes going to be activated.Showalter said that hes not thinking of Wolfs bullpen session as a tryout.Thats not respectful for a guy whos done what hes done. Hes had options, and this is where hes chosen to come, so I think hes capable of doing some good things for us, Showalter said.Ive always liked him. Hes very athletic, professional.Currently, Brian Matusz is the only left-hander in the bullpen, and Wolf could be signed to work there. The left-hander has pitched in relief just five times in 371 career outings, and just once since 2001.We look at Randy as a starter initially. Its also an option for him to relieve. Zach Phillips is also an option for us, Showalter said.Phillips, whos at Norfolk, has to be added to the 40-man roster.Showalter said some players may be recalled to be eligible for Saturdays game, the first one after the rosters expand.Wed take them as soon as we can. If they can impact the first game that theyre eligible in New York, were going to.Showalter said that Tommy Hunter, whos at Bowie, will be strongly considered for an early recall.Outfielder Endy Chavez, who agreed to go to Norfolk after the Orioles designated for assignment, may be called up to, even if hes batting .206 at Norfolk.
NOTE:-The Orioles will send Bowie pitchers Mike Belfiore, Chris Petrini, Clay Schrader and Mike Wright, catcher Brian Ward, second baseman Jonathan Schoop and Norfolk outfielder L.J. Hoes to the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. Ward is on the taxi squad, and can play only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
