The Orioles optioned pitcher Mike Belfiore to Norfolk, one day after they surprised the young left-hander by recalling him.

After the Orioles got two short starts from Jason Hammel and Steve Johnson, manager Buck Showalter wanted some bullpen insurance, so Belfiore was recalled.

Belfiore, who was 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA in 10 games for the Tides, wasn’t used in Sunday’s game.

The Orioles will add a pitcher for Tuesday’s game against San Diego. They might have brought back Jake Arrieta, but he has stiffness in his right shoulder. The team is waiting on the results of an examination of Wei-Yin Chen, who left Sunday’s game after five innings, to make further moves.

Jair Jurrjens started today and allowed five runs in seven innings. He could be added next weekend as a starter, and Johnson could be recalled if Chen is placed on the disabled list.

If a pitcher who is not on the 40-man roster is recalled, Brian Roberts can be transferred from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
