Cal Ripken Jr. on if he'll ever become an MLB Manager
BALTIMORE – To make room for Wilson Betemit, the Orioles optioned Ryan Flaherty toDelmarva. Flaherty is scheduled to play Wednesday and Thursday for the Shorebirds and will then go to Frederick for three games. He can return as soon as the Keys season ends on Monday. The Orioles didn't want to send him to Norfolk or Bowie because those teams are contending for the playoffs.
“If not him, then who?” manager Buck Showalter said. “You kind of looked at a lot of them. We’re facing, it looks like four out of six games left-hand starters.”
The left-handed hitting Flaherty is batting .218 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in 75 games.
“If we have a problem physically, we can get him right back tomorrow,” Showalter said.
“I explained it to him. I think they deserved to know from top to bottom about everything. I don’t hold much back where these things are concerned. I think they deserve to know.”
The Red Sox will throw left-handed Jon Lester on Thursday and it’s possible the Yankees, who the Orioles play this weekend will pitch CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte.
“If we were in a little different situation with the starting pitching we’re facing, we would have tried to look at it in a different direction. We’ve been seeing this coming for two or three days and ran about seven scenarios around, but for where we are, this probably fits us best to keep all the pieces in place,” Showalter said.
Without Flaherty, the Orioles can use Alexi Casilla as a utility player.
“We’ve got a lot of guys we can move around,” Showalter said.
There may be a number of moves between now and Sunday’s roster expansion.
“We’re going to go 24 hours to 24 hours,” Showalter said.
