The Orioles’ payroll is creeping closer to the $100 million mark. According to baseballreference.com, the Orioles payroll has reached $95.7 million.
The figure includes the addition of Scott Feldman, Monday’s starter, who’s making $6 million. Feldman was acquired earlier this month from the Chicago Cubs.
There are six players with salaries higher than Feldman’s: Nick Markakis ($15 million), Brian Roberts ($10 m), Adam Jones ($8.5 m), J.J Hardy ($7 m) Jason Hammel ($6.75 m) and Jim Johnson ($6.5 m).
Jones is in the first year of a six-year contract. His salary escalates to $15 million in 2014. Markakis, in the last year of his deal will again make $15 million. Markakis has a $2 million buyout for 2015.
Hardy will be in the last year of his deal.
Roberts, Hammel and Feldman will be free agents. Johnson will be in the last year of arbitration next year.
Nate McLouth and Wilson Betemit, who has yet to play this season are also free agents.
The Orioles are on the hook for $4.07 million for Tsuyoshi Wada, who is in the last year of a two-year contract, but has yet to play for the team.
According to the Associated Press, the Orioles’ payroll ranked 15th in baseball on Opening Day, at just over $90 million.
