BRADENTON, Fla. – Before the Orioles exhibition game with the Pittsburgh Pirates was cancelled, the team had set a tentative pitching rotation. Chris Tillman was scheduled to pitch. He'll start against Boston on Wednesday.
The game was called off a few minutes after its scheduled 1:05 p.m. start. Rain began falling nearly three hours before the game was supposed to start.
After Wei-Yin Chen, Jason Hammel and Miguel Gonzalez got through their bullpen sessions in windy Sarasota, Orioles manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Rick Adair penciled in their first starts of the spring.
Hammel is scheduled to start Friday in Sarasota against Pittsburgh. Chen will pitch in Port Charlotte against Tampa Bay on Saturday and Gonzalez faces Philadelphia on Sunday. Brian Matusz is supposed to follow Chen on Saturday.
Luis Ayala, who has been dealing with flu-like symptoms, may not pitch until about Mar. 10, Showalter said. Because of his workload in the Mexican winter league, the team will be closely monitoring his innings. The flu hasn’t made the Orioles back off of Ayala.
It was so windy at the Orioles’ complex that the pitchers’ bullpens were moved indoors.
Jim Johnson and Darren O’Day, who have yet to pitch also threw this morning, but neither is scheduled until the Orioles play Spain’s World Baseball Classic entry on Mar. 6.
