BALTIMORE – Miguel Gonzalez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 31, with a strained right oblique muscle. Gonzalez was scheduled to pitch on Saturday.
Kevin Gausman, who was in the clubhouse before the game, will be officially recalled from Norfolk and activated to start Saturday’s game for the Orioles.
Because Chris Tillman’s start was so short on Thursday, the Orioles have a crunch in the bullpen,Left-handed pitcher Tim Berry was recalled from Bowie, but he is expected to be returned after tonight’s game. Berry is 3-3 with a 4.12 ERA with the Baysox.
Right-hander Preston Guilmet was optioned to Norfolk, and righty Evan Meek is back for his third stint with the Orioles. Meek’s contract was purchased and infielder Michael Almanzar was transferred from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Meek.
Manager Buck Showalter said that Tommy Hunter would pitch for Delmarva on Saturday and be activated on Sunday.
“Tommy pitched two full-fledged innings yesterday. I want to see how he recovers and want to see him do it one more time,” Showalter said. “It would be easy to put that envelope because of where we are. We’re counting on Tommy the rest of the way and we want to make sure he’s right, and I don’t think we felt comfortable saying that for sure until he threw one more time.”
Showalter hopes that Gonzalez will pitch for Bowie or Frederick next week. He’s eligible to pitch again on June 15 and Showalter anticipates him pitching between June 15-17.
It was possible that Gonzalez could be ready to pitch in the next few days, but Showalter said the Orioles didn’t want to risk that.
“We just can’t that chance,” Showalter said.
