BALTIMORE – Last year, the Norfolk shuttle didn’t start running in earnest until early May. This year, it’s already up and running.
Alex Burnett was recalled on Monday from the Tides to replace Jake Arrieta, who was optioned to Norfolk. Burnett stayed for two games, didn’t get into either of them, and was returned to the Tides to make room for Wednesday’s starter, Josh Stinson.
Stinson was technically recalled from Frederick, for whom he pitched two innings on Saturday to stay ready in case the Orioles called.
If Stinson doesn’t get a second start next Monday in Seattle, Freddy Garcia, who’s 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA for Norfolk, may.
Garcia is thought to have a May 1 opt-out.
In his first rehab start Steve Johnson allowed four runs on six hits in five innings for Norfolk today. Johnson, who has been sidelined with a back injury probably needs another start or two before the Orioles consider bringing him up.
Jair Jurrjens, who has a mid-June opt-out clause, is also in the mix for an audition here.
Burnett is one of two players recalled by the Orioles this year not to appear in a game. Infielder Yamaico Navarro was called up on Apr.6 when Brian Roberts was placed on the disabled list, but returned the next day when the team activated Chris Tillman.
