The Orioles will try the impossible this week. No, they’re not guaranteed to make a big trade or sign a free agent or two. They’re going to attempt to convince Baltimore that there are two major sports teams in town.

On Saturday, one day before the Ravens take on the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship, the Orioles will hold FanFest.

Autograph vouchers sold out almost immediately, and attendance at the event is expected to be strong.

It’s a much easier sell than last year when FanFest was also held a day before the AFC Championship Game featuring the Ravens and Patriots.

The Orioles are expected to announce a contract extension for manager Buck Showalter this week, and he’ll receive a huge welcome at the all-day event.

The team will also hold a mini-camp from Wednesday-Friday for some of its younger pitchers. Former Oriole pitcher Mark Hendrickson will get an audition as he tries to generate some interest in a comeback.

-A reader reports that Zach Phillips has signed a minor league contract with Florida. I had listed him on Sunday as one of the members of last year’s Orioles who were still looking for work. Thank you, @OriolesUpdate8.

-J.J. Hardy will be one of the Orioles missing from FanFest. His sister is getting married on Saturday.
