Who’s on the bench? MASN’s Roch Kubatko hazarded a guess at who might end up composing the Orioles’ four-man backup group.

(Still, when I think of four-man backup, I tend to remember someone like the Stylistics. Sorry, a brief musical digression.)

Other than Taylor Teagarden as Matt Wieters’ backup, things seem more in flux — but that is also a function of still being far out of spring training and being uncertain of who will start in at least a couple of spots.

In any case, it should be a spirited competition for the few spots. In left field between Nate McLouth and Nolan Reimold, one starts and one is in reserve. In the infield, “Alexi Casilla is my super-utility guy, though he easily could be slotted as the starting second baseman. It all depends on Brian Roberts,” Kubatko wrote.

That leaves a final spot, which Kubatko awards to new Orioles infielder Danny Valencia, who could share designated hitter duties with Wilson Betemit. But so many others will be jockeying for position — including another new acquisition, outfielder Trayvon Robinson, plus infielder Ryan Flaherty and outfielder Steve Pearce.

Of course, this would have to be revisited if the Orioles make a move and pick up a first baseman or designated hitter. Or if Roberts doesn’t end up being as healthy as everyone hopes.
