Cal Ripken Jr. on if he'll ever become an MLB Manager
BOSTON – The Orioles will send eight players to the Arizona Fall League’s Surprise Saguaros. Henry Urrutia, who hit .269 in 21 games with the team after the All-Star break, is the only one with major league experience.
Urrutia will be joined by second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who could be a contender to make the team next season.
Both Urrutia and Schoop are now at Norfolk, but still could be called up to join the Orioles when the rosters expand next month.
Recently signed Cuban defector Dariel Alvarez, an outfielder who was promoted from Frederick to Bowie on Monday, will join Schoop and Urrutia. Baysox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez and pitchers Tim Berry (Frederick), Jason Gurka (Bowie), Branden Kline (Delmarva) and catcher Michael Ohlman (Frederick) will also be on Surprise.
Ohlman will be on the taxi squad and eligible to catch on Wednesday and Saturdays.
The team, which includes players from the Boston, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Texas organizations, will be managed by Bowie’s Gary Kendall. Aberdeen pitching coach Alan Mills will assist Kendall.
“I’m looking forward to going out there and watching them play. That’s all guys that have a chance to impact us. I really like the group we are sending out there. I think it has a lot to do too with Gary Kendall managing the club,” manager Buck Showalter said.
“It’s a good group, a really good group. If you compare it to years in the past what we’ve sent out there, you can see why I feel that way.”
Arizona Fall League play begins Oct. 8.
