The Aberdeen IronBirds have a new, aggressive logo, a design that was the brainchild of Bill Ripken.

Bill and big brother Cal, the team's owners, spoke about the change in this video posted at baltimoresun.com. Bill said he was inspired by the 1967 Orioles bird logo (“He was mean-looking,” Bill said), which featured the cartoon bird grasping a bat in one hand (wing?), grimacing and leaning forward, looking ready to wreak havoc.

The new logo for the IronBirds, the Orioles’ Single-A affiliate in Aberdeen, also takes part of its cues from Iron Man — the Marvel superhero, not the Orioles superhero — Bill said.

“You do want to appeal to the young fan,” Cal said.

The result is a frightening bird head and wings integrated with the body of a Harrier-type vertical-landing jet, with claws sticking out where landing gear would be. No more happy iron airplane.

“There’s the flame coming out there. There’s flames coming out of Iron Man’s hands,” Bill said.

“I’m thinking he’s intimidating.”
