SAN DIEGO –- Brian Roberts is back with the Orioles, after celebrating the birth of his son, Jax Isaac on Friday. He was on the paternity list for three days and was officially removed Tuesday afternoon and Danny Valencia optioned to Norfolk.
“I’ve waited a long time for this. It’s one of those experiences that is hard to put into words. It’s hard to comprehend until it happens to you, so it’s been a pretty cool couple of days,” Roberts said.
“It worked out well. You never know with our schedule and what goes on. Once we kind of got past that last road trip, I kind of had the feeling that I was in the clear.”
Roberts has missed so much time over the last few years for injuries that it was nice for him to be absent from the lineup for a good reason.
“He still doesn’t like missing games,” manager Buck Showalter said. “Things seem to be in pretty good order. He has some peace of mind.”
Roberts’ wife, Diana, has lots of parental support at home in Baltimore in caring for the newborn.
“I’m really thankful to have been there and support my wife as much as she’s been there for me the past couple of years. To be able to be beside her and support her, it was great,” Roberts said.
NOTE: Wilson Betemit was 2-for-3 at Gulf Coast in his first rehab game. He had a double over the centerfielder’s head, Showalter said. Showalter’s reports said that Betemit “was running a little gingerly.”
