BALTIMORE – The Orioles still had a game to complete after Manny Machado and Alexi Casilla were both lost in the seventh inning on Monday.

“It’s sad to see it happen to those two guys,” Jones said.

Without Machado, Ryan Flaherty gets his first start of the season at third.

“When you go across the white line, there’s a risk,” Flaherty said. “To see a teammate go down like that, it’s tough.”

Brian Roberts has lots of experience with overcoming adversity.

“It’s one of those of things when you know it’s part of sports, but you hate it,” Roberts said.

“To see a kid that young go through what he did yesterday at the end of such a phenomenal season, my heart broke for him.”

Roberts has come back to play from two concussions, a back injury, and surgeries on his hip and hamstring over the last three years. The first concussion and the hamstring injury both occurred at Tropicana Field.

He identifies with Machado’s upcoming rehab.

“It’s hard physically, it’s hard emotionally. It’s hard all the way around,” Roberts said.

“He’ll be back 100 percent, no doubt in my mind. It’s not really a matter of if, it’s a matter of just when. We all believe he’ll be better than he’s ever been.”

NOTE: The Orioles officially released Wilson Betemit, who they designated for assignment last week.
