What’s a day without another Orioles trade rumor?
This time, it’s Justin Upton. Don’t get excited, it’s just a report that Upton, who has three years remaining on a six-year, $50 million contract, is being shopped by Arizona.
The Diamondbacks are the same team that reportedly asked for too much from the Orioles for Jason Kubel. Supposedly last month, they asked for far too much from Baltimore for Upton.
In 2011, Upton hit 31 home runs and drove in 88 RBIs with a .289 average for the Diamondbacks. Last year, his numbers were off: 17 home runs, 67 RBIs and .280. While he strikes out twice as much as he walks, his on-base percentage numbers are more than respectable.
If Arizona wanted Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman or Manny Machado from the Orioles, it would be an impossible sale. They’re inexpensive, well-thought of prospects with great potential. Last season, fans got a two-month taste of the 20-year-old Machado at third base, and they liked what they saw.
Perhaps if the Tigers were willing to move Miguel Cabrera, the Orioles might listen to offers for the talented trio, but for now, forget it.
Let’s move on to the next rumor.
