Despite an 0-6 record and a 9.38 ERA at Rangers Ballpark, Orioles manager Buck Showalter has chosen Joe Saunders to start Fridays Wild Card game against the Texas Rangers.Its Saunders turn to pitch. He last worked on Sunday, and even though rookie right-hander Steve Johnson is also rested, Showalter admitted to some concerns about Johnsons left knee.Joes rested. Hes ready to go, Showalter said. Hes pitched some in the playoffs.Its a huge opportunity, Saunders said. He said that Showalter told him of the assignment just a few minutes before he spoke about it on Thursday afternoon. Its been an amazing experience, coming over to a great organization, Saunders said. Im going to embrace it and not change anything.The 31-year-old Saunders was acquired by the Orioles on Aug. 26 from Arizona. Hes 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts since the trade.Hes not afraid of pitching here despite his record.I can imagine. I dont care. Tomorrows a new day, Saunders said. Obviously, the Rangers have a pretty potent lineup.
