While most baseball fans savor Game 7, Orioles fans shudder.

The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals play the first game seven in the National League Championship Series since 2006. That year, the Cardinals beat the New York Mets, despite Endy Chavez’s miraculous catch in left field.

Last year’s World Series went seven games for the first time since 2002.

The Orioles have been in two seven-game World Series, in 1971 and 1979, and both times lost the decisive game to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In both years, the Orioles were heavily favored. In 1971, they had won their third straight pennant, and swept their third straight American League Championship Series.

They won the first two games in Baltimore, then lost three straight in Pittsburgh, including the first night World Series game. The Orioles won the sixth game in 10 innings, but lost the seventh game 2-1.

In 1979, the Orioles had a 3-1 lead before losing three straight to the Pirates, the last two in Baltimore.

Both game sevens were on Oct. 17.

Forgive Orioles fans for not getting terribly enthused about a seventh game. It brings back horrible memories.
