As he waits to hear if he’ll be manager of the year for the third time, Buck Showalter can appreciate his place among major league managers.

Not only did his Orioles win 93 games, but Showalter skyrocketed into the top 50 of all major league managers during the season.

Showalter won his 1,000th game on May 1, and 78 more. His 1,078 wins ranks him 49th on the all-time manager’s win list. Showalter wasn’t even in the top 60 when the season started.

If Showalter manages another three years with moderate success, he could reach the top 30. In order for him to get into the top 20, he’d probably have to manager six or seven more years.

At 56, Showalter may not want to stay in the dugout that long. He may want to try a front office job.

There are five active managers with more wins than Showalter: Jim Leyland, Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, Davey Johnson and Mike Scioscia.
