ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Seven weeks ago, the Orioles reported to spring training. After five weeks of exhibition games, it’s time to play.
Manager Buck Showalter isn’t worried that his team will have any trouble stepping up its intensity.
During spring training, players didn’t play the whole game. Some left after three at-bats.
“In spring training, five innings was the equivalent of about 12 innings, so physically I think everyone is looking forward to playing in a little more normal baseball environment,” Showalter said.
“This is what they do. They’ve done it since they were little boys. This is the end game. This is why we do all the things that we do.”
Showalter spoke with the team after they concluded their Monday workout. He’s more of a manager who chats than a speechmaker. After a relatively uneventful spring training, his conclusion is simple.
“This team is ready to play,” Showalter said.
