BALTIMORE – Matt Wieters has begun recovering from Tommy John surgery on June 17. There’s still no word on when Wieters will join the Orioles.
Manager Buck Showalter said he spoke with Wieters on Friday, but didn’t broach Wieters’ return. The Orioles believe Wieters will be ready to start the 2015 season.
“He’s upbeat. The swelling is starting to go away. He’s doing well,” Showalter said.
After the surgery, Showalter said he thought Wieters would be joining the team for the homestand that begins on July 9.
“Matt knows this is a very important time. He’s got a real good setup in Atlanta. We’ll see him when we see him,” Showalter said.
A day after the surgery, Wieters suggested that he’d travel with the Orioles in August and September.
“We’d love to have him around. He knows how welcome he is any time, Showalter said.
