For the next two weeks, it will be Super Bowl hype. A year ago, it was the Ravens that were talked about. Now, it’s Richard Sherman and Peyton Manning.
Fortunately, a day before the Super Bowl, FanFest comes along, and according to my calculations, 36 of the 40 players under major league contract will be there.
I didn’t see Wei-Yin Chen, Edgmer Escalona, Bud Norris or Francisco Peguero on the autograph schedule. Troy Patton, who will start the season with a 25-game suspension, will be there.
With snow falling, today it’s hard to believe that spring training starts 23 days from now.
Of course, the weather in Florida will be much more pleasant than here.
Masahiro Tanaka, who the Orioles did not bid on, is reportedly nearing a decision on his American future, and that should heat up the free agent market again.
It was pointed out this morning, that there have been no major free agent signings since Tanaka’s posting last month.
Chad Gaudin, who was briefly linked with the Orioles during the winter meetings, signed a minor league contract with Philadelphia on Tuesday.
On Monday, it was reported that 40-year-old Brett Tomko, who last won a major league game in 2009, would audition for the Orioles on Friday.
Tomko pitched for 10 major league teams from 1997-2011, and even if he was impressive in his audition, the odds of him returning to the majors are very small.
