With the split of their weekend series, the Orioles and Yankees have finished the regular season with nine wins against each other. While it would have been nice psychically for the Orioles to have won the season series, there actually was another advantage.

Should the Orioles and Yankees end up tied for the division title, they would have a one-game playoff to determine the American League East champion. Home field for such a game would go to the team on top in Major League Baseballs tiebreakers, the first of which is head-to-head records. If the Os and Yankees finish with the same record and occupy both wild-card spots, the home team for the one-game wild-card playoff also is determined by MLBs tiebreakers.

The next tiebreaker after head-to-head is division record. Right now, the Orioles have a three-game lead on New York in AL East record. If they end up with the same division record after 162 games, the next tiebreaker is American League record in the second half of the season. If theres still a tie at that point, MLB starts counting back on AL games until the tie is broken.

And if theyre still tied after that? The managers have a dance-off determined by the Dancing With The Stars judges.
