Tampa Bay’s Wil Myers, who didn’t make his major league debut until mid-June, won the American League’s Rookie of the Year Award on Monday night.
Myers beat out Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesisas and his Rays teammate Chris Archer.
In his first big league season, Myers batted .293 with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs. Last November, he was traded to Tampa Bay in a trade that sent James Shields to Kansas City. He received 23 first-place votes.
Iglesias, who was traded from Boston to Detroit batted .303 in 109 games with two home runs and 10 RBIs. He received five first place votes. Archer was 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts and got one first place vote. Oakland’s Dan Straily was fourth and also received one first place vote.
DISCLOSURE: I voted for Myers, Archer and Iglesias.
