Maybe Kevin Gausman isn’t that far away from the majors. On Sunday, he dazzled Harrisburg, allowing just a run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings. Gausman didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight in Bowie’s 1-0 loss to the Senators.
It didn’t matter that Gausman was a hard-luck loser. He retired the last nine batters he faced and struck out the final two.
In his five starts for the Baysox, Gausman is 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA. What’s most impressive is that he’s struck out 29 batters and walked just one.
Last year after Dylan Bundy breezed through eight starts at Delmarva, he walked 18 batters in 57 innings at Frederick and eight in 16 2/3 innings with Bowie.
“Four walks in Bowie is more walks here,” manager Buck Showalter commented after one of Bundy’s starts.
Gausman’s control is impressive, and it may soon be time to challenge him at Triple-A, where lots of players with major league experience await.
