Orioles fans wouldn’t trade Buck Showalter for anyone. San Francisco Giants fans undoubtedly feel the same about Bruce Bochy.

Bochy won his second World Series in three years on Sunday night. Showalter hasn’t managed in a League Championship Series, let alone a World Series.

Showalter took a team that was expected to do nothing, won 93 games and beat Texas in the Wild Card game before losing to the Yankees in five games. Bochy’s team came from a 2-0 deficit to Cincinnati in the Division Series and a 3-1 deficit to St. Louis before totally outclassing the Detroit Tigers in four games.

Bochy began managing in 1995 with San Diego, had them in the World Series against New York three years later and just completed his 18th straight year as a major league manager.

Showalter started three years earlier in New York and has managed four different teams over 14 seasons.

Neither has a terrific career winning percentage. Bochy’s teams are just 10 games over .500, Showalter’s 60.

Bochy has won one more World Series than Earl Weaver, Jim Leyland, Bobby Cox or Whitey Herzog. He’s just 26 wins behind Weaver for 22nd place on the career wins list.

Never mentioned in the discussion of great managers until now, Bochy will now enter it. Eventually, he may enter the Hall of Fame.
